the bone ships
High-fantasy book review
I liked the high-fantasy book Bone Ships. The world building is strong with both original ideas, excellent cultural immersion/creativity, and a clear, enjoyable aesthetic which as best as I can describe feels like a mixture of Norse and Polynesian with some original elements sprinkled in.
The characters are solid, and the character arch of our lead is well paced, earned, and rewarding.
The plotting is good, both well paced and well conceived, with a good mix of action to character scenes as well as graduating stakes, a wonderful twist, and a strong central conflict that is well delivered upon.
The prose is good, flowing well and building the aesthetic of the world and characters while effectively delivering the emotional impacts and experiences the plot requires.
