As zombie books go, The Last Sanctuary skews closer to action/horror than just strictly horror with various actions sequences, a massive siege, and other battles. The zombies themselves are relatively standard, no particular gimmicks or likewise, but well handled, especially in the beginning before the survivors find their feet. There are moments where the action scenes and characters surviving can stretch plausibility, which fits with the book’s heavier action orientation but might break the horror aspect for some readers.
The pacing itself is fast, making for an easy read, and the prose is solid, though sometimes the author’s more romantic/fantastical style can be a bit much. The plotting is good, with the character decisions being for most part logical, excluding a few character-driven moments, and the author doesn’t shy from killing primary characters. The human antagonist(s) are engaging, successfully building acrimony and threat, but occupy a bit more narrative capital than I personally prefer. This is not a fault of the book, I just prefer horror that focuses on the monster rather than the human and The Last Sanctuary is closer to a fifty/fifty split.
