High-fantasy horror book review
The Black Dust Rises is a short fantasy with soft horror themes, and it serves both of these aspects relatively well. Despite its brevity, theres a good amount of fantasy to be found in it, with various concepts both folded neatly into the story and effectively introduced. I particularly enjoyed the more horror elements, with the monster slotting enjoyably into the role of mysterious, insurmountable predator.
The general prose is solid, and the characters good but they do suffer a bit from the story’s length. They’re given fun interactions, and reasonably vibrant personalities, but the main character’s arc happens a bit too fast, and their various relationships with one another do end up feeling accelerated.
Aside from suffering a bit from the aforementioned acceleration, the plot is solid and builds to a fun conclusion with a nice little reveal and the right amount of bad ideas born of desperation.
